Unable to figure out what to consider when hiring an eCommerce developer for your dream eCommerce store?
With a large pool of eCommerce development service providers, it becomes quite strenuous to select the one who competently meets your requirements. Therefore, we have listed down some of the crucial factors that you must consider while finalizing the best eCommerce web development company for your online retail store.
Clear your requirements
Before initiating your hunt for the ideal eCommerce developer for your project, you must have to be clear with your requirements. It might sound that eCommerce developers just do one job, but their work spectrum covers many diverse professional streams.
Your business needs must match with the deliverables of your chosen eCommerce development company. Therefore, select the one whose proficiency aligns straight with your business needs and holds relevant experience in working on similar projects.
The must-have features
Designing an eCommerce website is a very extensive and complex process. There are numerous features that you can add to your eCommerce store. But, adding them would directly affect your cost and project completion timeline.
That’s why it is recommended that you must list out all the ‘must have’ features of your eCommerce website and ask your developer to work on them on priority, along with asking them to provide you cost and time estimation accordingly. Later, you can always add secondary features to an online store.
Evaluate Budget
Budget plays the central role, especially when you are in the early days of your business. So, ensure that the eCommerce professional you finalize offers you cost-effective solutions within your stipulated budget.
Request a quote from the e-commerce developers asking for estimated pricing of design, database configuration, and development. Only after considering all the internal and external factors, should you set a moderate budget and strictly ask your developers to finish tasks within the defined budget.
Technical Expertise and Experience
Before you get into an agreement with your eCommerce developer, check its expertise and experience. The professional should have a skilled team of professionals with tested results in the field.
Besides, the development team must be familiarized with the industry trends technology. They should be competent enough to understand and cater to your needs effectively. However, if you choose Hauper Technologies as your e-commerce development company, you can enjoy varied benefits.
Request and Examine the portfolio
Once satisfied with the technical expertise of the developer, you should inspect their work portfolio to know what sort of projects they have developed in the past. Like, whether they have catered to the B2B or B2C projects in the past.
Besides, numerous factors require technical assistance while developing an online retail store such as payment gateway integration, third party integration, inventory management systems, CMS support, catalog management, multiple filters, etc., From the portfolio, you should try to examine all these skills of a developer that you are about to hire.
Ensure the Communication
During the evaluation process, ensure that the company has open and transparent communication policies because that would immensely affect your development process. Always plump for frequent video calls or face-to-face meetings with your developers to look over the development progress of your website and also keep on asking questions so that you know whether your developer is working towards your vision or not.
Check if they are offering support services
Whether you are building an online jewelry brand or an online hardware store, every eCommerce store needs maintenance and support after the site is launched.
Your business needs to keep an updated site to match the industry competition. Thus, it becomes crucial that the company or the individual developer you choose to work with must offer support and maintenance services to resolve the issues in the future in the shortest time possible.
Whether you decide to hire a freelance eCommerce developer or an e-commerce development agency, all these above mentioned are the common factors that you must give a thought about before hiring.
And, if you are wondering who would be best to plan, handle and execute your eCommerce store with efficiency, a freelance eCommerce developer or an eCommerce website development company, refer to the table below.
| Factors | Freelancer | Company |
|---|---|---|
| Communication | You can directly communicate with a freelancer to get an update on your project. But, if your project is a bit bulky and you are working with more than one freelancer, you need to make efforts to understand and reach out to them, which is a time-consuming option. | When hiring a development firm, you work with a highly organized team having great internal connections. Moreover, you will have a clear insight into each and every update of your project on time, which makes it possible to monitor the working progress and to make any corrections if needed. |
| Control Over Development Process | You probably have no control over how your freelancer works on your project. They can deliver the project on time or don’t give a damn. They convince you that they can execute the function but, later may straight away refuse without giving a reason. | Whereas, an outsourcing agency offers you absolute control over your business processes because agencies usually offer tailored services that make you feel that the specialists are right beside you. |
| Meeting Deadlines | A freelancer may or may not be serious about his words as he is single-handedly handling multiple projects at one time. | Whereas, outsourcing agencies are known for their words and commitments. Moreover, you will legally sign a contract with the company, and they are bound to deliver said deliverables within the defined time frame. |
| Project Management Skills | Working with a freelancer will bind you to do the management partly on your own, or you may end up hiring more freelancers, who will have to work with each other. | When working with a development company, you are hiring a complete team along with a project manager who would be accountable for all of the project-related issues. |
| Quality Service | Freelancers may or may not have reliable work feedback. So, it is uncertain whether they actually hold enough skills and experience to address your requirements effectively. | Hiring an outsourcing agency will not let you down in any situation. They ensure to deliver quality services in a comprehensive manner. |
| Skills & Expertise | Technology keeps on evolving, thus keeping yourself updated is crucial. For a one-man army, it would be tedious to keep updated with every industry trend. So your project might have to compromise on the latest industry trends. | When hiring a development company, you work with a number of skilled employees, who have knowledge in diverse fields. |
| Support | Working with any freelancer individual may not guarantee you long-term support during or after development. | Most of the development companies today have a long warranty period, so you don’t have to worry even a bit about any problem related to your digital platform. |
| Vision | A freelancer can only prove to be favorable if he has experience working in diverse fields. | Whereas a company can offer you a vast range of pertinent examples. |
Summing up
Choosing an eCommerce development company over a freelancer is always a wise decision. A freelancer is a one-person army handling manifold clients at the same time, and is always under tremendous pressure to meet deadlines, whereas, an outsourcing company is a registered firm with an in-house team of skilled and experienced professionals who are committed to quality and client satisfaction.
Thus, before making your choice make sure you look at both sides of the coin or a story!
